Our History

1960s–1969

Founding
Taunton State Hospital

P.R.I.D.E, Inc. was founded on the belief that every individual deserves the opportunity to live a meaningful, independent life. The idea for our organization began in the 1960s, during a time of growing awareness around the civil rights of people with disabilities and the deinstitutionalization of individuals with severe mental illness. Recognizing the need for supportive, community-based environments, our founder, Dr. Sterling Cotlin, established PRIDE, Inc. in 1969 on the grounds of Taunton State Hospital, providing vocational training and opportunities for patients with mental illness.

September 1973

Community Expansion
Raynham, Massachusetts

By September 1973, PRIDE, Inc. expanded into a community-based facility in Raynham, Massachusetts, incorporated as Preparatory Rehabilitation for Individual Development and Employment, Inc. (P.R.I.D.E.). Serving 50 people annually, the PRIDE, Inc. Workshop offered vocational evaluations, training programs, counseling, placement services, and simulated work environments to assess skills, behaviors, and employment readiness.

1980s–Present

Current Facility
3 Maple Street, Taunton

As demand for our services grew, PRIDE, Inc. moved to our current 35,000-square-foot facility at 3 Maple Street, Taunton, in the 1980s. Today, we serve more than 250 individuals, providing innovative programs in vocational training, adult foster care, day services, community engagement, and employment services—all with the ongoing mission of improving quality of life for all.
